Loss From Suicide Support Groups
If you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one through suicide, the Bay Center is here to provide support, understanding, and acceptance as you navigate the grieving process.
Please join Bay Center for support, understanding and acceptance through the grieving process.
Under the guidance of skilled facilitators, groups will allow participants to explore, within a “trusting, nurturing and confidential environment,” their reactions to loss, learn about the grieving process, develop strategies for coping and begin to integrate this change into their lives in order to move forward. Our groups are facilitated by licensed professionals, clergy members, or trained facilitators.
There is no fee for participation in this program, however donations are welcome.
Our support groups meet one hour every week for 6 weeks to complete a series. There are two Loss From Suicide Support Groups Series throughout the year: Spring & Fall.

More on loss from suicide…
The following is press release:
ADDRESSING VIRGINIA’S SUICIDE CRISIS: HOW DEDICATED GRIEF SUPPORT
HELPS SURVIVORS NAVIGATE COMPLEX LOSS
WHITE STONE, Va. — Suicide remains a major public health concern across the Commonwealth of Virginia, taking nearly 1,200 lives each year—an average of one death every seven hours. As communities work to bolster prevention efforts, attention is increasingly turning to the hundreds of thousands of Virginians left behind: the survivors of
suicide loss. To meet this critical need, local community non-profit The Bay Center for Spiritual Development, located in White Stone, Virginia, are offering a specialized grief support group tailored specifically to those navigating the unique, complex trauma of losing a loved one to suicide. The program begins October 7th and meets every Wednesday from 1 - 2pm for six weeks. Men account for the majority of suicide deaths in Virginia, dying at a rate nearly four times higher than women. Firearms account for over 55% of all suicide deaths in the Commonwealth and while higher population centers see large overall counts of suicide loss, rural regions—such as the Northern Neck—often experience elevated per-capita suicide rates.
The Hidden Demographic: Suicide Loss Survivors
Research published by the American Association of Suicidology indicates that for every single suicide death, an estimated 135 people are directly impacted. In Virginia alone, this leaves tens of thousands of new loss survivors each year facing profound emotional distress.
Suicide loss affects individuals across every demographic line—spouses, children, parents, siblings, extended family, friends, coworkers, and first responders. However, survivors of suicide loss often experience a distinct type of grief known as complicated grief. Family members often experience acute trauma, elevated risk of depression, and intense guilt or self-blame. Friends and community networks frequently grapple with shock and confusion, complicated by the social stigma that still surrounds self-inflicted death.
How Suicide-Specific Support Groups Help Healing
Standard bereavement groups often fall short for suicide loss survivors, who must navigate severe emotional hurdles including social stigma, overwhelming "why" questions, guilt, anger, and traumatic stress. Dedicated, suicide-specific support groups—such as the Loss from Suicide support group offered by The Bay Center—fill this crucial gap. Facilitated by trained professionals and peer leaders who have experienced a suicide loss, groups utilize evidence-based touchstones to help participants process trauma, manage unexpected grief triggers, and rebuild daily routines. This leads to long-term integration, helping individuals move from acute trauma toward integrating the loss into their lives, honoring their loved one's memory while restoring hope for the future.
"Grieving a death by suicide is an extraordinarily isolating journey," said a representative from The Bay Center. "Our dedicated support groups are designed so that no survivor in our community has to process that pain alone. By creating a safe space for honest reflection, we help families navigate the complex layers of grief toward processing and ultimate healing."
